That means nearly 59% of enterprises are currently directing incremental budgets toward what the report calls “mission-critical AI trust infrastructure.”

They understand that poor data quality and weak data governance cannot be fixed by a smarter prompt. It requires an architectural upgrade.

  • Is your current AI failure mode a model problem or a context problem? If outputs are inconsistent, hallucinated, or only reliable in narrow demos, the answer is almost always context.
  • Is your semantic layer a BI tool feature or enterprise-wide infrastructure? If you have a semantic layer, its scope dictates your scale. Tool-scoped logic cannot support enterprise-wide AI agents.
  • Do your current systems expose business concepts or just tables? A semantic model built directly on top of raw schema is significantly less powerful for Gen AI than one built on top of a structured, business-aligned ontology.
  • Are your decision-makers involved in defining the model? If this is purely a data engineering exercise, adoption will suffer. The logic the system applies must match how the business actually thinks.
  • What does production-readiness require in your environment? Some approaches require months of data centralisation before they function. Federated architectures that connect systems through meaning (without physically moving data) can compress time-to-value significantly.
